St George's Healthcare Trust
The
history of the hospitals dates back to 1733 when the St George's Hospital was
opened on the corner of Hyde Park. Due to demand the hospital was rebuilt between
1825 and 1829.
Due to it's location and the increase of the population over the hundred years, noise became a problem and Mr Atkinson Morley willed a legacy to St George's for the purchase of land and building of a convalescent home in Wimbledon, which opened in 1869.
A few years later a need arose for inpatients hospital. Through
public subscription and charitable gifts a member of the Board of Governors
of the Battersea Dispensary, Canon J Erskine Clarke purchased a house in Give
Houses Lane, Battersea belonging to the Viscount Bolingbroke and founded the
'House of Sickness' - the Bolingbroke Hospital in 1880.
Just before the second world war it was decided to rebuild the St George's Hospital on Hyde Park corner. By the time the funds were raised the hostilities had started and the plans put on hold.
As St George's and Bolingbroke hospitals were used for more and more war casualties, the Neurosurgery Unit was first set up at the Atkinson Morley's Hospital.
Soon after the introduction of the NHS in the early 1950's, the Grove Fever Hospital in Tooting was used for the new location out of the city for St George's Hospital and in 1954 changed it's name to St George's Hospital.
The
adjacent hospital 'The Fountain Children's Hospital' was relocated and the redevelopment
of the site commenced in 1973. By 1974, after a NHS reorganisation, the seemingly
linked hospitals became officially linked.
In 1980 the first phase of the hospital was completed and the old Hyde Park hospital site was closed.
In 1993 the St George's Group became the St George's Healthcare NHS Trust which continues to operate the hospitals today.
There are 29 lift installations located at the three sites. They vary in age and design and are subject to intensive usage. Since we have been maintaining these lift we are happy to say the breakdowns have reduced by approximately 50%.
